Welcome to Trail Almanac. By using this site, you agree to the following terms. Rather than filling this page with walls of obfuscating legalese, I intend these terms to be actually readable. So please do.
1. What Trail Almanac is and is not
Trail Almanac collects, curates, and displays long-distance hiking trail data.
It is not a land management authority, a guide service, or an emergency resource.
It is my (very serious) attempt to build the most useful and accurate trail dataset available for long-distance hikers, and to make it freely accessible.
2. The Data is Provided in Good Faith but Please Use your Head
I make a huge effort to collect and normalise data from a wide range of sources. I love doing it and I’m committed to providing the most accurate information I reasonably can. That said, I can’t guarantee it’s error-free.
Please bear in mind that trail conditions and regulations are subject to change, GPX tracks on this site are illustrative and are often smoothed and compressed, and that I am not responsible for the weather.
Nothing on this site should be exclusively relied upon to keep you safe, legal, dry, happy, or sane.
Before any serious trip, please:
- verify the current trail conditions
- carry appropriate safety equipment
- be in reasonable shape for the trail you’ve chosen
- be appropriately insured.
Hiking is not a risk-free activity. I’m not responsible for any injury, loss, or misadventure arising from your use of this site. You hike at your own risk.
3. User-Submitted Content
I’d love your input in the form of corrections, data challenges, reviews and trip reports.
When you post a review, photo, trip report, or any other content, you keep ownership of it. But by posting it, you grant Trail Almanac a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to display, distribute, and format your submission as part of the platform.
In plain terms: I can show your trip report and other content on the site and maybe feature it in social posts or newsletters. I won’t sell your content to third parties.
You’re responsible for anything you submit and you confirm that:
- You own it or have the right to share it
- It doesn’t infringe anyone else’s copyright
- It’s accurate to the best of your knowledge
- It doesn’t contain anything harmful, illegal, or defamatory
In the case of photographs, you must not submit photos containing identifiable third parties without their consent.
I reserve the right to remove content that doesn’t meet these standards or that I determine is inappropriate, inaccurate, or harmful to other users.
4. Accuracy Disclaimer
I work hard to keep trail data correct, but I can’t guarantee it is error-free. I make no express or implied warranties about the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any information on this site, whether it comes from me, other users, or third parties.
User-submitted content reflects the author’s experience at a specific point in time. Conditions, access, and regulations may have changed since a review was written.
5. Affiliate Links and Promoted Content
Core trail data is free and will remain so. I intend to include affiliate links and some promotional content in future to help cover the substantial cost of building and maintaining the site.
I won’t promote organisations or trails that aren’t in line with Trail Alamanac’s mission and values, even if offered payment to do so.
6. Privacy
I collect some information about you when you use the site. Things like:
- your account details
- the content you post
- standard web analytics
I don’t sell your personal data. For the full picture, see the Privacy Policy.
7. Your Account
If you create an account, you’re responsible for keeping your login secure and for anything that happens under your account.
You must let me know promptly if you think your account has been compromised by emailing [email protected].
8. Prohibited Behavior
You must not use Trail Almanac to:
- Post false, misleading, or deliberately inaccurate trail information
- Harass or harm other users
- Do anything illegal
The trail data, structure, and original content on this site represent a significant amount of work. You must not scrape or reproduce it in bulk without my express consent.
9. Changes to These Terms
I may update these terms from time to time. If I make significant changes, I’ll let you know by email or via an on-site notice.
Continued use of Trail Almanac after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms.
10. Contact
If you’ve any questions, comments, corrections or trail suggestions, drop me a line at [email protected].
